Total-IA
The Total-IA brand is centred on Information Assurance and ruggedisation of ICT equipment, whether that be for the TEMPEST & military EMC markets or the deployed environment.
We combine extensive knowledge on end user devices with an understanding of network communications and experience practical experience of integrating Data at Rest and Data in Transit technologies into our hardware.
Much of the work we do is project based: custom design, development and production. We also have extensive experience enhancing the security of COTS products through integration and modification. Our products process information at the highest levels of security in scenarios where product confidence is essential.
TTC3000-A
CASE STUDY - BACKGROUND
The TTC3000-A is a typical TEMPEST design uplift which has been at the core of TIA’s design services since our inception. Driven by customer requirements, the aim of the project was to design a TEMPEST Level A device which integrated the Dell Optiplex 3000 Thin Client and a Dell external DVD drive. TIA’s preferred approach with all TEMPEST projects is to utilise early evaluation testing to understand the extent of the modifications required to achieve TEMPEST compliance. This overview of the donor unit’s performance is then balanced off against the customers hardware requirements to determine the design approach. For the TTC3000-A, evaluation testing confirmed the unit’s suitability for TEMPEST uplift and confirmed the customers preferences for commercial connector interfaces and power provision were achievable.

CASE STUDY - DESIGN PHASE
With the design approach is confirmed, TIA’s mechanical and electronics engineers worked in unison to generate 3D design data to visualise the proposed solution. Our 3D design data allows our engineering team to demonstrate the proposed design to their internal and external customers. Our production team can analyse the solution from a Design for Assembly viewpoint, suppliers can confirm component manufacture suitability and design can be shared with the customer. Key challenges within the design of the TTC3000-A were the installation and user access of the DVD drive and the requirements to provide commercial connectors. TIA’s use of a CNC machining enabled a robust installation of the DVD drive using machined internal features for mounting and a machined access door to maintain the TEMPEST seal. TIA’s engineers designed internal shielding features into the machined chassis which ensured the commercial connectors were TEMPEST compliant.

CASE STUDY - CERTIFICATION & PRODUCTION
Our 3D design data also allows us to utilise 3D printing to verify our designs, in the case of the TTC3000-A the engineering team used an external printing bureau to print an SLS model of the chassis and lid. These parts were complimented by in-house prints to allow the team to conduct a verification build prior to our design sign off with the customer and our TEMPEST engineers. After design sign off, the project moved in a prototype phase, production intent parts are procured on minimal lead times to ensure that the project proceeds to TEMPEST certification rapidly. Prototype build freezes and documents the production build standard prior to TEMPEST certification and production. As with all TIA TEMPEST products the TTC3000-A was certified to SDIP-27 by an independent, NCSC approved, test house. The completion of TEMPEST certification allowed the project to move past our production gateway, with responsibility for the project handed over to the operations team. Driven by a frozen design data pack, production builds are conducted in-house and verified by a TEMPEST product assurance test, TPAT, prior to customer deliveries.
